Announcing the publication of CEU Press’ next two Open Access books funded by Opening the Future

Central European University (CEU) Press is pleased to present two new Open Access books this month funded by the Opening the Future library membership programme:
- Policemen of the Tsar: Local Police in an Age of Upheaval, Robert J. Abbott. A study of Alexander II’s police force - key instruments of tsarist power - their role and performance in the mid-nineteenth century and their systemic weaknesses, struggles for reform, and reliance on the military to maintain law and order.
- Free-Market Socialists: European Émigrés Who Made Capitalist Culture in America, 1918–1968, Joseph Malherek. A narrative of immigration and adaptation, focusing on the lives of three remarkable European émigrés who fled the Nazis; interweaving their biographies with those of their wives, colleagues, and friends with whom they collaborated on projects that would shape the material environment and consumer culture of the United States.
These two books will be published in Open Access (OA) format, making them freely accessible, available and downloadable to the research community immediately after publication. Funding for these two new Open Access titles comes from the Press’ collective library membership initiative Opening the Future, bringing the initiative’s OA output to 7 titles.
Author Joseph Malherek says: “Too often academic books are restricted to silos of specialization, but I'm pleased that a book with the potential for interdisciplinary interest such as Free-Market Socialists will be provided with a venue to reach a broader audience through Opening the Future."
Robert Abbott said: "Benefits to readers aside, I value Open Access because of its ability to get my research findings to a much larger audience than would otherwise be possible. Because of the importance I attach to my work, this means a great deal to me. "
Opening the Future at CEU Press is a cost-effective way for libraries to increase their digital collections on the history and culture of Central and Eastern Europe and the former communist countries.
Subscribing libraries get unlimited multi-user access to curated packages of backlist books, with perpetual access after three years. The Press uses membership funds solely to produce new frontlist titles in OA format. All OA titles are available via Project MUSE, JSTOR, OAPEN, DOAB and the ORL.
